Seth Godin- This is broken

This is broken

This video comes from a conference called 'Gel 2006' in New York City. It is spoken by Seth Godin about broken consumer products in our society. He uses photos of ridiculous signs and products for example food lines in movie theaters and a sign with the words "this sign and sharp edges" to amuse the audience while getting his point across at the same time. The video exploits idiotic decisions made by companies and the mechanicalism of people to only do the jobs they have been given and not think for themselves. This video guarantees to make you laugh.

Here is my summary on the video:

  • Stuff that’s broken, why is broken and if it’s a good or bad thing, how to benefit from them
  • What does it mean to be broken? If I think its broken- its broken,
    • Not my job
      • Its not my job to fix it
      • The system in broken
      • Fix the original problem, don’t try navigate around it
      • Not my job- not my problem, why should I bother
      • Things go on unfixed
    • Selfish jerk
      • Spamming people- emails
      • Advertisement
      • Contradiction
    • Challenge in technology
    • I didn’t know
      • Testing out a product in order the understand what the consumer needs
      • Idiotic products
    • I’m not a fish
      • Not thinking about the consumer
    • Contradiction
    • Broken on purpose
      • So people can see the brokenness
      • To prove a point
